Cargo Cults is the collaboration between Atoms Family/Hangar 18/Def Jux rapper Alaska and Wrecking Crew/Three Dollar Pistol rapper-producer Zilla Rocca, who are also the hosts of the Call Out Culture Podcast.
Their acclaimed debut album, Nihilist Millennial, turned its razor-sharp wit and self-deprecating humor on a society seemingly determined to destroy itself. Six years later, Cargo Cults return with a different target in their sights: their own mortality.
On Kingdom Music for the Hard Rocks, Alaska and Zilla Rocca examine aging in a culture built for the rich and the young. The album reflects on the loss of friends—not from "booze and drugs and violence," but from "DNA and crummy diets"—while exploring how the experiences of youth shape the realities of adulthood. Though its themes are weighty, the record is far from bleak. Instead, it celebrates the freedoms that come with growing older, the people who helped shape our lives, and the perspective earned through surviving long enough to look back.
