Lex Records is an independent label institution out of North London, founded in 2001 by Tom Brown, originally an imprint of Warp and fully independent since 2005. The catalog reads like a history book of left-field hip-hop and experimental music: MF DOOM, Danger Mouse, Danger Mouse & Jemini, BADBADNOTGOOD & Ghostface Killah, Neon Neon (Gruff Rhys & Boom Bip), Kae Tempest, Eyedress, Pink Siifu & Fly Anakin. "LEX XX" is the 20th anniversary remix album: 20 commissioned remixes of key Lex catalog tracks, reimagined by artists the label itself admires. The remixer list is extraordinary: Boards of Canada ("Treat 'Em Right" by Nevermen), DJ Premier (Prince Po "Social Distortion"), Prefuse 73 (Golden Rules ft. Freddie Gibbs & Yasiin Bey), Madlib (Fly Anakin "No Dough"), Thom Yorke (MF DOOM "Gazzillion Ear" – his "Man On Fire Remix" dates to 2009 and was previously played on Benji B's BBC Radio 1 show), Chad Hugo (JJ DOOM "Guv'nor"), King Krule (Eyedress "Jealous"), Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine (Eyedress "House Of Cards"). The physical package is accordingly ambitious: limited 3LP box set in a triple gatefold embossed sleeve, pressed on 180g vinyl at the Vinyl Factory, D-side with a bespoke etched design, book and sleeve printed at Imprimerie du Marais in Paris, creative direction by Commission Studios. The album is a memorial release – in loving memory of Rob Mitchell, Nick Kilroy, MF DOOM, Dax Pierson, and Jemini The Gifted One.
