Crime or rhyme – the oldest fork in the road in rap writing, and Ramson Badbonez makes it the title of single number four from Crystal Skull, his upcoming album fully produced by Illinformed, landing at the end of the month on High Focus Records. The one-MC-one-producer format is where Badbonez has always hit hardest, and Illinformed's murky, head-crack drum work is a natural habitat for his gravel-voiced, menace-with-a-smirk delivery. Four singles deep into the rollout, the pair clearly aren't rationing material – a sign of confidence in the album's depth rather than a thin record stretched across a campaign. Dfacer handles the video, keeping it in the High Focus house tradition of visuals that match the grime-adjacent grit of the music without overproducing it. For the collectors, the physical run leans into the album title: a limited-edition Blue Crystal 12" vinyl alongside CD, cassette and merch, all in restricted numbers – UK underground labels remain among the best in the world at making physical formats feel like artifacts rather than afterthoughts. The UK's independent rap infrastructure keeps proving that full-length rapper-producer statements are its strongest export. Crystal Skull looks set to continue the argument; "Crime or Rhyme" is a solid piece of evidence ahead of the verdict.
