A Brand Nubian co-founder on the stage of a former railway station in Heidelberg’s old town: that was the Heidelberg stop of Sadat X’s “Never Left” European tour, and HHHEADZ was there with the camera running. The full session is up on our YouTube channel. The setting matters. Grün&Gold sits in the listed Alter Karlstorbahnhof at the eastern end of the Altstadt—the room that was Klub K for decades, now run by the HIP HOP HEIDELBERG e.V. as the city’s dedicated hip-hop venue. It is a space built for exactly this: close quarters, a crowd that knows the records, and an MC who has been performing them since the early nineties. Sadat X needs little framing for this audience. The voice is unmistakable—the same nasal, off-kilter attack that cut through Brand Nubian’s catalogue—and the “Never Left” title is a statement of fact as much as a tour name. He did not leave; the room full of heads who turned up on a Saturday night were proof. The tour exists because of Fokis. The New York producer-MC founded NewEuro Booking after years of touring the continent himself, and the Heidelberg date was produced in cooperation with Grün&Gold as local promoter. It extends a run that has already brought Axiom Tha Wyze & Andy O, Lakmann and Edo. G to European stages—a working model of artists booking artists, and Fokis has made clear he intends to keep bringing both new names and veterans across. The undercard was regional and deliberate: Offenburg’s TongueTwist and DriveBy opened, and Nadim “Air Fork One” Kabel pulled double duty, performing and then shooting the night as photographer. Philly’s Grand Agent was the special guest on the bill—his set gets its own write-up. The crowd was the usual Heidelberg mix, with local figures like Martin Stieber in the room, which tells you how this city treats a visiting New York original: not as a nostalgia act, but as a peer.
