Beedie's Beedromania came out twelve months ago, and the video for "Hell In A Cell" arrives almost exactly a year on which is either a coincidence or a very Pittsburgh kind of anniversary present. Either way, it's the right track to revisit. The concept, one more time Beedromania is built on a single comparison: modern rap behaves like professional wrestling. Fifteen tracks, interludes included, cut like a card entrance music, promos, a backstage interview, a finishing move. The production roster reads like a pay-per-view billing: August Fanon, Wino Willy, Nicholas Craven, illdigger, Stu Bangas, Nice Rec, Brainorchestra. Skyzoo, Blu, Fam Ross and JvGGY Hendrix take the features. Beedie recorded the whole thing at The Panther Den, Big Jerm and Beedro mixed it, Kevin Nix mastered it, DJ Brace cut it up, and the vinyl was pressed by Hellbender in Pittsburgh. Why this track Nicholas Craven produces, and he builds the kind of loop that already sounds like it's waiting for something bad to happen sparse, cold, drums placed to leave space. Beedie opens with a message to someone inside, which is the record's real subject: not the ring, but the phone call you can't make. "I heard your bed was close to over. Might be home before the summer time." Boldy James takes the back half and does what he does, which is sound unimpressed by everything including his own good fortune. Detroit to Pittsburgh and back, and neither of them raises his voice. Then the outro: a hardcore-legend voice introducing himself, complaining about nearly breaking his back when the Undertaker threw him off the top of the cell, and then nearly doing it again nodding along to the beat. It's a joke, and it's also the album's whole argument in thirty seconds the spectacle and the damage are the same thing. Louis Petrone, James Hill and Phillip Thompson shot it, Marcos Ochoa cut it, Beedro and Phillip Thompson directed. If you slept on Beedromania the first time, the anniversary is a good excuse.
