Dark Lo and V Don are one of the established configurations in hard East Coast rap: Lo out of Philadelphia with his unrelenting, unfiltered delivery, V Don producing with the cinematic, soul-cored sound he's built a label on. Made of Gold, released in July, was their fifth album together. "Manhattan" is not on it which means this is new material, presumably from whatever they have queued up next. The video landed this week through Serious Soundz, V Don's label. Two minutes nine, and the structure is the interesting part: rather than a hook, the record runs on call-and-response, with a second voice repeating and punctuating each line "Best dad." "Let's go." It gives the verse the feel of a room rather than a booth. The writing is pure Dark Lo, which means two registers running at once. "Crack house I graduated to the meth lab / Daughter hug me say I'm the best dad" is the whole career in a couplet the damage and the domestic life placed side by side without comment. "It made me stronger the less I had" is the thesis, and "You blessed if we ever collab" is the warning. Lo came home in 2025 after serving four years and has been working continuously since. V Don, out of Harlem, has spent the last few years producing full albums for Boldy James, Estee Nack, CRIMEAPPLE and ANKHLEJOHN, and this partnership remains the most durable of them. Covered here repeatedly over the last few months. This one is short, and it's new.
