Sankofa x August Fanon "A Tree Grows" [SINGLE]

Sankofa works at a rate most rappers would find alarming. Since 2020 he's put out dozens of projects, and the format is almost always the same: one MC, one producer, one album, done. Monster Factory with G Fam Black, Show & Tell with Gensu Dean, Planet Rock with Draztik. He comes out of Fort Wayne, Indiana, which is not a city that generates much coverage, and the volume is partly a response to that. "Calm on Purpose," the full-length he made with Houston producer August Fanon, came out in July thirteen tracks, under forty minutes and "A Tree Grows" is the track getting the visual treatment now, three months on. The pairing makes sense. Fanon is a patient producer, the kind who lets a loop run long enough that the drums start to feel earned rather than dropped, and he has a working relationship with G Fam Black that suggests he likes MCs who write inward. "A Tree Grows" does what the title promises: slow, organic, an opening that stays open. Sankofa's delivery is measured and conversational, the opposite of the rapid-fire approach his release schedule might imply. That contrast is the whole appeal a rapper who could release anything choosing to release something this considered. For heads who like the one-MC-one-producer album format, Sankofa is one of the most reliable names working in it.
