WateRR x Wavy Da Ghawd "Bigger Than Arsenio" [VIDEO]

WateRR and Wavy Da Ghawd released Did You Miss Me in the final week of September fifteen tracks, about forty-five minutes, the follow-up to Washed Ashore and "Bigger Than Arsenio," track three, is the song getting a video now. WateRR raps out of Chicago's South Side and Wavy Da Ghawd produces, and the duo format is the point: this is one emcee and one producer working as a unit rather than an album with guests bolted on. The record is built around a talk-show framing, and you can read it straight off the tracklist it opens with "The Varnell Hill Show," and "Madonna in the Green Room," "Varnell Origins" and "Lake Varnell" are placed through the running order like segments. "Bigger Than Arsenio" is the most direct expression of it. The hook escalates "This is bigger than music. This is bigger than rap. This is bigger than that. Bigger than Arsenio" and the Arsenio Hall reference does two jobs at once: it names the format the album is borrowing and it sets the ambition. Wavy's production is the strongest part of the record. He builds warm, layered loops and leaves the drums unhurried, which gives WateRR room to work in a conversational register rather than a technical one. Bub Styles, Ty Farris and Imani Nichele take the guest spots across the album. Worth noting honestly: the concept is more interesting in theory than it is sustained across fifteen tracks, and the interludes don't always earn their place. But the rapping and the beats hold up on their own, and "Bigger Than Arsenio" is one of the songs where the framing and the music actually agree.
