1999 WRITE THE FUTURE & Souls of Mischief "Road Runnin" (feat. Jay Worthy) [VIDEO]

The most useful fact about "Road Runnin" is in the credits: produced by A-Plus. That's one of the four Souls of Mischief making the beat for his own group, which is a different thing from a group hiring outside production thirty-plus years into a career. The song is a car record, and it sounds like one "100 spokes and the paint clear coat hydroplaning percussion tidal waves and potholes" is a verse written by someone thinking about motion. Jay Worthy takes the hook and he takes it from the position of a visitor, which is the right instinct. "Road Runnin, you could say the map is my playground," he raps, and then places himself: "Slidin' in the Long Sleeve, hit Souls when I'm in The Town." The Town is Oakland. "Hiero, aye what's hatnin' though" is him addressing the family by its abbreviation. He doesn't pretend to be from there; he says he comes through and links up. That's worth more than an adopted accent would be. The video is a driving shoot with real stunt drivers four of them credited from Motovisions directed by The BAKARI Company and shot and cut by Aaron Brown, with a separate operator for the car work. The credits list a stunt team by first names, which tells you the cars were actually moving. Where the song turns is in the second Souls verse, past the car talk: "I ain't worried 'bout 12, ridin' past them bastards / They're mad at blackness and bad to black kids / That's why so many feel like they have to pack sticks." Nearly thirty-five years after 93 'til Infinity, the group still sounds like four people who rehearse together, and still uses the record to say something plain. The EP this comes from is already out, and it continues a partnership that started on the 88rising collective's 2024 album a record whose guest list ran from Ghostface Killah and De La Soul to BADBADNOTGOOD. "Road Runnin" is the third video from it. A translucent orange-and-green vinyl edition exists but doesn't ship until the end of the year, so plan accordingly.
