Six volumes. That's the number DA Donnieboy is working with The Tower currently runs from Vol. 1 through Vol. 6 on his own pages, with Volumes 4, 5 and 6 all landing this month. If you were expecting a single album with a rollout, you have the wrong artist. What Vol. 1 actually is Fourteen tracks, forty-two minutes, Detroit, self-released through LevelBeyondOmega. Donnieboy also known as Don Adonis, and affiliated with Configuration Records works as a host rather than an auteur here: ten guests across the tracklist, including Nacelous Mis, Gmac, Mic Audio and Fro Magnum Man sharing one record, DJ Ace on another, and LJ Lady Jane, GabrielTheMessenger, NAM NITTY, Wilderness. and ONIONZ BEATZ filling the rest. That's a crowded bill, and it sets the album's character communal, arranged, built around people he records with constantly rather than around a concept. Titles lean heavy and devotional ("Hymn of Him," "Crimson Dawn," "Empty Funeral," "Osirus"), and the sequencing opens and closes on those, with the harder material "Durag Music," "Blue Summer," "Intriago" in the middle. The method The Tower volumes aren't his only output. Donnieboy has also been running Grand Theft Hip-Hop 365: Slobber Knocker, a weekly series with Nacelous Mis that has passed fifty instalments, plus the Smoke Train records. No production credits are listed on any of it, and no statement explains the strategy which, at this volume, is itself the strategy. Six albums in a matter of weeks is either discipline or compulsion, and the only way to tell is to listen. Vol. 1 is fourteen tracks of Detroit independent rap made without a machine and without a gatekeeper, and it's a cheaper bet than most records you'll hear this month.
