Preservation & Gabe 'Nandez "Galleon" [VIDEO]

"Galleon" arrives as a follow-up single to Sortilège, the album Preservation and Gabe 'Nandez put out on Backwoodz Studioz and it extends that record's method rather than repeating it. Preservation builds a slow, salt-stained loop; 'Nandez raps over it like someone reading from a logbook he'd rather not have kept. The writing is the reason to pay attention. He opens on a hotel-ceiling scene "Familiar Florida ceiling covered in mad wine" and the images keep arriving in pairs: black fingernails picking cigarettes off the floor, black silhouettes doing pirouettes on the wall. It's dense without being decorative. The line that anchors the whole verse is economic rather than emotional: "Money is the last of the water before the storm. / Money is the first thing they charge you after you born." That's the album's thesis compressed into two bars, and he delivers it flat, letting the rhyme scheme carry the weight. There's a generational aside late "Generation Z don't know nothing about respect" which could curdle and doesn't, because it's immediately followed by the admission that the anger in his lyrics isn't forgetfulness. The verse then turns to ships and single-mindedness, which is what the title is about: a galleon is slow, heavy, and gets where it's going. Marley Chapman shot, directed and cut the video. Gabe 'Nandez remains one of the few MCs working at this level of image-density whose records still sound like they were written in a room rather than assembled from lines.
