Seven tracks, under seventeen minutes, out of San Antonio. Garcia Vega keeps the whole thing tight: one track over three minutes, two under two, and a title that reads like a rejection of optimism as a strategy which, in a seventeen-minute EP, is the right kind of thesis. The guests do the structural work. Mac Yames takes "Wicked Ways," Spit Gemz appears on "Black Avirex," and Tre Eiht closes out a remix of "Flawed Excellence" three voices from different corners of the underground, none of them phoning it in. What holds it together is that Vega doesn't hand over the records; the features are additional pressure, not relief. His own delivery sits low and level, closer to conversation than to performance, and he tends to land the hardest line at the end of a run rather than setting it up. "Speaking Spanglish" closes it in under two minutes, and the title is doing real work: this is a record from a Texas MC whose frame of reference runs in two languages without making it a theme. No producer credits are listed, so the write-up stays with what's audible sample-based, drums forward, mixes that favour the vocal. The physical release is the interesting part: a limited 7" pressing, and a CD that carries a bonus track. In a market where most underground EPs exist only as a stream, somebody still cutting a 7" is a decision.
