Mickey O'Brien - Antipathy (feat. Myka 9)

 

For the first single from his third album, Orebody, Mickey O'Brien enlists the assistance of Myka 9, a recent touring partner and founding member of the Grammy-nominated Freestyle Fellowship, to touch on the topic of disgust using as a metaphor the general disregard by the general public and the powers that be for the poisoning of our water, which can also refer to humanity as a whole as well as to the self. From Montezuma's Revenge to Flint, Michigan, there's something in the water. The chill, melancholy production by Juno-nominated producer Fresh Kils is augmented by Anthony Rinaldi on sax and Zachary Clement on keyboards. Along with his verse, Myka 9 lends his voice to the hook backed by the soulful singing of Sarah Craig. 

The single is released with an even more melancholy and soulful remix by Factor Chandelier, and the accompanying animated video by Baked Clown makes the message of “Antipathy” more explicit.

DJ Moves provides another ill-boding track for the emcees to do their thang on (one of them even says the beat gives them the heebie-jeebies) and they do it to the fullest. The hook may warn people not to believe everything they see, but believe your ears — this track is dope.

Tackling a list of stereotypes that prescribe what men and women are supposed to be, LXVNDR and Phoenix Pagliacci join Ghettosocks in squaring off against every outdated social standard imaginable. Male bravado, gender reveals, sexism, old fashioned constructs and boomer-era expectations are just some of many topics that the trio puts it on blast as they challenge played out norms and encourage people to rise up with open minds.

With a title like “The Masters” and lyrics penned by Ghettosocks, CL Smooth and El Da Sensei (three masters in their own right), one might expect this song to be a brag n’ boast-athon of epic proportions. Instead, each of the emcees digs deep and waxes poetic on trying to thrive in tougher times — including living through a pandemic. The slow, sax-laced track from DK sets the pace as a scratch-vocal hook takes a more direct approach and reminds suckers not to step.
