Cold Camp x The Dirty Sample "Avalanche" [SINGLE]

The first single from Calgary crew Cold Camp's upcoming sophomore album, Winter Dreamz, moves with weight and clarity in a steady build that crashes down with purpose. The Dirty Sample’s chime-filled beat for “Avalanche” feels hypnotic, almost serene, until the rhythm hits and everything shifts. His remix switches out his original production for a gritty, off-kilter NYC gutter beat. On the mic, Chaka Boy and Bully Bravo are confident, composed, and unshakable. This Cold Camp anthem highlights momentum, pressure, and power in motion.

Ultra Magnus - Anthem (official video)

“Anthem” is the patriotic first single from And Nero Played, the upcoming new album from Ultra Magnus dropping this summer on Hand'Solo Records. The song is a rallying call for Canucks worldwide who value our sovereignty over servility. Ultra Magnus delivers a crowd-pleasing sing-a-long chorus and Canada-centric lyrics over a chill beat heavy on piano. The video features shots of the politically-charged final game of the National Hockey Leagues’s 4 Nations Face-Off combined with further footage that highlights the content of the lyrics. Oh, Canada, I think we have a new national anthem! Elbows up!

Chadio & The Gumshoe Strut "Bring It Back"

Now based in Kamloops, BC, veteran MC Chadio returns with “Bring It Back”, the second single from his forthcoming album, Root Sellers. Dropping this summer via Hand’Solo Records, the project marks a new chapter — rooted in experience, sharpened by time, and driven by purpose. Over gritty, soul-infused production from acclaimed beatmaker The Gumshoe Strut, Chadio blends clever wordplay, lived-in perspective, and a deep respect for the craft. It’s a boom-bap burner that feels equally at home on dusty speakers or in fresh playlists. Already known to many through his “Sunday Bars” live rap sessions on Instagram, Chadio continues to carve out space for thoughtful, grounded hip-hop that hits hard without shouting.

Epic & Deadly Stare open the doors to A library called Calder

Welcome to the enigmatic world of A library called Calder, the latest from veteran Canadian emcee Epic. This world-building hip hop record pulls together a rich collection of thought-provoking narratives as Epic issues his reports and observations from once familiar territory. From the opening strains of “Chickpeas, Epic brings the listeners with him as he points out jarring changes in the world around him, musing about what once was while pressing on into an uncertain future that still finds hope on album finale “Properly Swim”. With a perspective as unique as his voice, Epic guides listeners through a labyrinth of emotions and ideas, each verse twisting and turning around the dreamlike, otherworldly production by Montreal's Deadly Stare (Triune Gods, Endemik Music). Ethereal beats grounded equally in Golden Age boom bap and sweeping prog rap abstraction serve as the perfect compliment to this mesmerizing and profound record that serves as a travelogue of both past and present. Together, Epic and Deadly Stare have built something magnificent in A library called Calder. Step inside and check it out.

Mickey O'Brien & Lee Reed fight "Plutocracy"

Sudbury-based rapper Mickey O’Brien returns with a searing new single that cuts through the noise with unflinching social commentary and raw energy. Fusing gritty boom-bap with razor-sharp verses, “Plutocracy” confronts economic injustice and corporate power with an urgency that speaks to the times. O’Brien and politically-charged lyricist Lee Reed trade bars like battle cries, while Uncle Fester’s surgical scratching and the cinematic production of Danny Miles, drummer for the Juno-winning rock band July Talk, elevate the track into a protest anthem built for the underground.

The Dirty Sample is "Feeling the Sun"

It’s the first day of Spring. The end of the day. The warmth has tired your very bones and all you want is a place to feel the sun soaked into your skin. Glorious! Like this song. The perfect soundtrack to your sun bathing activities. The Dirty Sample achieves this aspiration with off-kilter drums, some keys, and a drenching of the vocal sample that gives this song its title. Ah, the beauty of “Feeling the Sun”.

Chadio & The Gumshoe Strut - "Been A Minute"

"Been A Minute" pairs veteran wordsmith Chadio with longtime collaborator and producer The Gumshoe Strut, delivering a track that’s equal parts introspection and head-nodder. Chadio’s bars cut with quiet confidence, tracing themes of distance, reconnection, and personal evolution, while The Gumshoe Strut lays down a dusty, soul-laced groove that feels lived-in and cinematic. It’s a smooth listen with bite—proof that underground doesn’t mean undercooked. If this is the tone-setter, the album’s about to hit deep.

The Dirty Sample reveals "The Vision"

One look and the chaos of the world comes together into unity. All of this madness leads the eyes to love, and love is seen everywhere. Even the darkest places still have love. You just have to be looking. Because love always wins if you let it. You just need the vision. And The Dirty Sample helps inspire this vision with a chill boom bap beat built out of slamming drums and horn stabs.

Epic & Deadly Stare - Fug Dord

In the midst of promoting their upcoming new album, A library called Calder, Epic & Deadly Stare drop this non-album track to call out the Ontario premier as we head into election day in Ontario. “Fug Dord” is a short, silly track that mocks the infamous hash dealer turned crony capitalist premier over a cool reggae beat from Deadly Stare. Inspired by a bizarre news conference with Doug Ford addressing car theft.

Epic & Rob Crooks introduce "Sad Rapper Jack"

Epic & Rob Crooks present “Sad Rapper Jack”, the second single from their forthcoming album, Nassau Manor, on Hand’Solo Records. Writing to the melancholy, ethereal beat by Rob Crooks, equal parts soulful and jazzy, Epic was thinking of a good friend of his that was sad all the time when he realized Jack was part of a much larger sad rapper movement. Were The Smiths to blame? Using Jack as a surrogate for this phenomenon, Epic delivers his message with a dry sense of humour and in his unique folk rap flow. “Sad Rapper Jack” was recorded at the Nassau Manor apartments in Winnipeg, MB in a closet padded with a cut-up used cubicle bought at a surplus sale. That’s a different kind of sad.

Written and performed by Epic
Produced by Rob Crooks

The video was filmed and edited by Rob Crooks, featuring Epic rapping around a wintery Edmonton, AB at landmark sites such as the West Edmonton Mall, the Starlite Room, and his own basement and backyard. Also includes cameos by local rappers Touch and Emprime.

Fortunato x The Dirty Sample form "The Coalition"

“The Coalition” is a love letter from Fortunato to his fans. He illustrates his commitment to providing wisdom and guidance to his listeners during the hook. “As a veteran of the rap game, I feel it’s my duty to share my experience and knowledge” says Fortunato. “The Coalition” is the title track of the album and refers to the cross country collaboration between Fortunato and producer The Dirty Sample. The single also includes a a remix by Pasquale which starkly contrasts the album version with a downbeat low tempo interpretation that feels slightly psychedelic.

Tachichi & Gordski are "Cucumber Cool"

What does one do when they’re cool as a cucumber? They write a song about it, of course! So that’s what Tachichi did for his 2014 project with DJ and producing partner Gordski. Previously only released on Bandcamp for a limited time, the duo drop for streaming their second single from Felt Lovejoy in celebration of the 10 year anniversary of the original EP. Tachichi breaks down what makes him cucumber cool with a hard, braggadocio battle rap and a “surgical flow” over a crunchy Gordski beat, while Yasmeen Borden and Jay O Smooth join him for the catchy chorus. The latter also provides back ups on the verses. “Cucumber Cool” as described by T, more truthfully now than ever before, is “future funk that’s fashionably late.”

Epic - "Ah Hemsky"

Epic's classic ode to Edmonton Oilers player Ales Hemsky gets the maxi-single treatment to support the 15th anniversary celebratory 12” vinyl release of Aging Is What Friends Do Together. Included alongside the smooth original are remixes from Newselph, who provides a laidback summer vibe, and Saskatoon Folk Rap Records label mate emprime, who provides a crunchier but still chill vibe with additional vocals from Halifax, NS MC Christ Sampson, who adds a further melodic layer to Epic’s abstract, sing-song delivery and then becomes the star of the show with his own cover version of the song. The maxi-single also includes radio edits and instrumentals for each. Ah Hemsky, you're so good!

Introducing "No Town Vandal"...

Introducing No Town Vandal, the name swiped from a gamer tag of a friend 15 years ago and kept on the back burner awaiting the day he was ready to embrace this name that was more true to his actual self. At the time, the MC was going by Primordial Emcee and was a founding member of Toronto rap group Faction, who would release a couple of albums and an EP before disbanding to pursue solo careers. Primordial Emcee released a single solo album with Hand’Solo Records before a name change to District Prime and the formation of a new group, Primal Winds, with MC/producer/beatboxer Iron Wind, also a prior member in Faction. Primal Winds released six albums, an EP, and a bunch of singles before breaking up. Now, he re-brands as No Town Vandal and breaks down the meaning behind the name on his self-titled first single from his upcoming NTV EP. “No Town Vandal” is a hype track with a big, banging beat from D-Low Beats out of Rome, Italy and a variety of tight flows that demonstrate a confident MC who has levelled up.

The Dirty Sample - Beats to Murder Rappers to (instrumental album)

The Dirty Sample’s new instrumental album is no trick; it’s all treat! Dropping on October 28, 2022, just in time for Halloween, Beats to Murder Rappers to is filled with creepy, quirky instrumentals that should entertain whether you need a soundtrack for your costume party, to hand out candy, to carve up the pumpkin, or, as the title suggests, to murder rappers to, metaphorically speaking, of course. The album runs the gamut from soulful, off-kilter doo-wop (“Linger”) to atmospheric chillers (“Headless”) to warped boom bap instrumentals (“In the Mirror He Waits [One for Rob Roy]”), and even picks up the pace from the usual downtempo vibes for a rare chunky synth beat down (“Twisted Pleasure”). This horrific holiday season, join us on a journey into the warped mind of murderous beat slayer The Dirty Sample.
